Keep it clean and simple. Opt for one focus (eyes, lips or cheeks) and make it one you wont need to constantly touch up through the day. You never know how long a job will take, you will always encounter some form of a delay and you need your makeup to hold up no matter how long you’re needed at a job.</p> <p>In saying that don’t skip out on any components of your own makeup, you need to look professional. So a full face is always required, with all elements applied with precision and care. I wore a nude eye, natural blush and a bold lip. My lip lasted the whole day and I didn’t once need to even look at myself. Its a mark of skill if your client sees your own makeup can stay on and not need touching up. It builds confidence in them that you’re good at what you do.<br/><br/><em>KEEPING CALM</em><br/>Don’t forget anything. If you do, don’t let on that you have. It will cause panic and doubt. Brainstorm quietly to yourself another way around it. I have found myself in situations where I have had to use mascara as liquid eyeliner. Lipsticks can make a great cream blush, eyeshadow can be used as a lip color. Do your research and know how to use everything in anyway you can.<br/><br/><em>YOUR KIT</em><br/>Keep your kit clean. I can not stress this enough, a client always looks at your tools. They will study it all, your brushes and makeup. It’s interesting to them, chances are they haven’t seen that amount of makeup in one place before. If your kit is dirty or your brushes aren’t clean from the last job you did they wont say anything, to you… You can bet they will tell all of their friends and family though.</p> <p>A makeup artists best advertisement is word of mouth. If your standards are poor, you will lose out on business before even touching a face. How many times have you been put off a restaurant or store because of hearing bad reviews? Keep your kit well stocked with everything, make a checklist of what should be there and go over it the night before so you know it’s all there for you to take and go.<br/><br/><em>PERSONAL PRESENCE</em><br/>Be extremely conscious of your hygiene, you’re in very close proximity with one another. Keep your hair pulled back. Nobody wants another persons hair being draped or shedding on them. Wash your hands, keep your nails short and do not wear chipped polish. It looks tacky and dirty. Shower and wear deodorant but do not wear perfume. It is overpowering and not everyone enjoys smelling your signature fragrance that close up.<br/><br/><em>FOOD, DRINK AND ETIQUETTE</em><br/>Take mints, do not chew gum. Take your own water and snacks, don’t expect to be able to take a tea break or ask to eat their food. If it’s on site, at a function it is incredibly rude to help yourself to the catering indented for guests. Keep to yourself but be polite, you’re there to do a job not be social. Don’t feel the need to engage in constant conversation with your client if you have to concentrate on detailed work.<br/><br/><em>TIMING</em><br/>Arrive on time. Give yourself plenty of time for each face, and keep an eye on the time. If you don’t have enough time plan to bust out quick looks you know you can do well. If you only have twenty minutes and you know you can’t do liquid liner very well don’t try doing it in that time frame because chances are you will stuff it up and need to take it all off and start again.</p> <p>Be realistic in your approach. Be honest, if you get hard requests you know you need more time to do then tell your clients you can’t do that unless they can give you more time. Wear a watch and watch it closely. Be flexible, because your clients will always delay you and you are bound to have at least one difficult person who isn’t happy with what you do to them.<br/><br/><em>BE CONSTRUCTIVE</em><br/>For that difficult client, work with them, listen to them and change it for them. It’s their face and it’s not a personal qualm with you. I am very fussy with how my own makeup is done and I expect whoever is doing it to listen to me. Get them to critique you and offer what they like and don’t like, so you can tweak it all to be perfect for them.<br/><br/><em>VISUAL MATERIAL</em><br/>Take books and pictures, to show them. In case they have no idea what they want done and give you nothing to work with. Get them to choose something, or a few things and work off that. Ask them what they like about it and incorporate it into what you already want to do for them. Remember each eye-shape and face is different, requiring various techniques. You can’t just copy looks straight out of magazines when the client has a different eye-shape and can’t wear the colors like the model in the photo.<br/><br/><em>TAKE PRIDE</em><br/>In your work, enjoy it. You’ve been a big part of making a woman feel good about herself and have positively contributed to someones special day. It’s a good feeling to have, to know you’ve accomplished something so important.</p> </blockquote> <p>So well written.
